HOPE DENTAL CLINIC
The Task:
Archstorming collaborated in an architecture competition with His Hands on Africa, a non-profit organization that addresses the lack of dental services by equipping communities to achieve sustainability with dignity. The task was to design a Dental Clinic and Training Institute in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, where the winning proposal would be built.

The Hope Dental Center is designed as a terraced campus which offers clinical dental care, education and training facilities, dormitories, and a warehouse for the storage and distribution of dental supplies. Buildings and landscapes are integrated; linear buildings follow the slope, are low in scale, and open to terraced patio and garden spaces which serve as waiting, healing, and social spaces. The three terraced buildings responds sustainably to the steeply sloped topography minimizing cut and fill. The buildings are linked by a pedestrian spine along the east, which provides a direct connection from the lower entrance in the north to the southeastern entrance located at the perimeter wall near the dormitories. A gentle handicap accessible pedestrian ramp switches back and forth through the gardens
